Find a specific topic in the hospitality industry Dissertation

Find a specific topic in the hospitality manufacture - thesis ExampleThe hotel and give assiduity is an extremely competitive celestial sphere of industry. Understanding its working and the manner in which pay and c atomic number 18er paths are defined in this competitive business environment becomes extremely useful in providing information to young people taking their first steps towards gaining the necessary skills and knowledge for a successful ad productive life ahead. Such an understanding will also enable the hotel and catering industry to take steps in decrease employee turnover loss that could be arising from low pay structures. This should not be based on hearsay, but rather on hard facts. This research is proposed to be undertaken to provide evidence on the actual pay situation in the hotel and catering industry and the satisfaction of the employees on their rewards package. Literature Review The hotel and catering industry is a very important constituent of the hosp itality industry. Large luxury hotels to small cafes are the range of the hotel and catering industry. The hotel and catering industry is among the largest employers in the unquestionable world. In the United Kingdom (UK) it employs almost ten percent of the workforce, which numbers close to 2.5 million people (Yadav, 2002). Yet, the House of Commons North East regional Committee Third Report of Session 2009 -2010 Tourism in the North East, lays claim to the hotel and catering industry being a sector where low paying work is a common occurrence. In the opinion of Wood 1992, the hotel and catering sector is one with low entry barriers and therefore a fertile principle for the entry of small time entrepreneurs. The low barriers to entry allow small and family businesses to be present in large numbers in the hotel and catering sector and their presence contributes to the low pay image in this sector (Getz, Carlesen & Morrison, 2004). Even in the large hotels competition and the drive to keep costs low reflects on the low pays paid in these hotels (Vanselow, 2008). The low takings and low education and skill level requirements in the hotel and catering sector of the hospitality industry has seen the influx of a large number of immigrants as workers in this sector of industry (Williams & Hall, 2002). Guegnard and Meriot 2008 point out that one of the reasons for low per person average wage in the hotel and catering sector is that the number of managers is low with a very high percentage of blue collar workers and temporary workers. Besides low wages the hotel and catering industry also carries the stigma of high turnover, reflecting either lack of job security or worker satisfaction (Boella & Goss-Turner, 2005). Voss-Dahm 2008 opines that people can be attracted and remain committed to different sectors of industry for reasons other than pay, citing the example of sales people in the retail sales sector. From Malhotra 1997, we understand that people with proble ms are attracted to the hotel and catering sector for the additional advantage of stay-in facilities, for it allows them to escape from their background or their problems at home. Job choice is influenced by two factors namely the money in it and the convenience it offers. In the hotel and catering industry it is not the money that attracts workers, but the convenience. Convenience needs to be read in several ways (Riley, 1996). The convenience elements are convenient, easy to learn, have variety, gives

Civil society and religious figures in Saudi Arabia - literature review

Civil smart set and religious figures in Saudi Arabia - review2 - Literature review ExampleFinally, some see civil society as a loose public arena for deliberation and reason rather than ascription or inherited advocacies (Hermida, 2013 Karskens, 2008). Throughout the spectrum of definitions, the most salient characteristic of civil society is that it represents the interest and benefit of the general population. The definitions vary in terms of nature (bureaucratic and institutional versus grassroots), origin (government-established or spontaneously organised), and source of championship (government or private). The overlap with state bureaucracy and funding often raises the question as to the independence of civil service presidency. Arab monarchies generally see no occupation with CSOs pursuing the civil goals of government, as government goals should be aligned with the peoples best interest (Bellin, 1994). Western countries on the other hand retrieve that CSOs must be a part y separate from the government and free from intervention, in order to truly represent the welfare of the public free from political interest. It is evident that the concept of civil society continues to remain ambiguous, and the particular meaning given to it shall be imbued with the context of the society in which the civil society organisation operates. 2. Soviet Union Democracy transformation in 1998 There are two notable aspects of civil society in the context of post-soviet Russia, according to Jagudina (2002). bingle is the doubled character of the Soviet public domain of a function, and the other is about solidarity through exchange of favours. The so-called double character refers to the co-existence of (1) a rigidly regulated economic and social framework under Soviet leadership, and (2) the dynamic disparate networks and local environments comprised of families, neighbours, colleagues, and close acquaintances. When the rigid political framework fall throughd in the la te 1980s, the public sphere evolved into a vacuum that was quickly turned into a space where new informational technologies took over, fostering confrontation, ambiguity, and manipulation by clerics and activists (Jagudina, 2002). The other aspect is that of solidarity through exchange of favours. The said(prenominal) disparate networks of families and close associates operating beyond the range of the heavily regulated social framework, and provided reference points and communication channels for circulating information that were considered more certain than official channels which towed the government line (Jagudina, 2002). This traditional society is comprised of networks of solidarity based on primordial communities, kinship and patronage (Roy, 2005, p. 1006). In the early 2000s, after the collapse of the Soviet regime, there eventually arose 250-300 organisations that perceived themselves to be the new burgeoning Russian civil society, springing from the underground networks that former operated under the radar of the Soviet regulatory framework. explicitly political, these organisations provided a critical voice in government by airing the grievances of the broad segment of the population. During World War II, women had begun to work and take on more responsibilities, and they became used to being treated more like equals. After the end of the war, they were expected to go back to being submissive and agreei ng to everything their husbands told them to do. Obviously, this did not sit well with many liberated women. This aspect of the story is more of a reflection than a criticism. It can be seen in how the various female characters in the story are critical of the tradition of the lottery. This is obvious from the story, because there are many places where women question the established traditions, like Mrs. Adams, who says that Some places have already quit lotteries (Jackson, 308). However, it is equally obvious that the men disagree. This was the same in reality, where many men were strange to feminism because they wanted to remain socially superior to the other gender. In other words, society defined experiences centered around males, with females as mere accessories. (Feminism) redden though Feminism didnt really exist until the 1960s, there seem to be very strong elements of it in The Lottery with female characters like Mrs. Adams. The

As long as they dont take forceful messures like cutting nursery staffing levels, the future for them looks pretty good as long as they cut stuff of less important value.

Ancient Egyptian Religion Seen Through Art and Architecture Essay Example for Free

Ancient Egyptian Religion Seen Through Art and Architecture EssayThese compositions demonstrated not only a course of art never before seen, but they also showed innovative techniques that wee-wee been duplicated for centuries. Although these works, which consisted well-nighly of pottery and wall murals, seem to be quite simple to the violent eye, they were what most consider to be a stylized portrait of the times. J. R. Harris comments on this in his book, The Legacy of Egypt, purported lack of grace and charm, unnatural stylizationthese were not shortcomings, but meaty manifestations of Ancient Egyptian arts specific nature (194). Another unique aspect of the Ancient Egyptian culture was the construction of elaborate, and sometimes enormous, works of architecture. This is referable to the great care that the Ancient Egyptian rabble took in constructing the temples, tombs, and halls of their period. In construction, the perfect knowledge of geometry of the architects is f ully demonstrated (Howell 41). Ancient Egypts buildings were, in their time, the most remarkable landmarks known to man. Also, the ability of the architects of Ancient Egypt to include decorations into the edifices they constructed was highly developed.Tombs and temples alike were greatly adorned with colorful paintings, hieroglyphs, and symbols that added to their beauty. The earliest known art of the Ancient Egyptians was believed to have been very undefined and unskilled, according to Elizabeth Payne in her book, The Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt. Crudely at first, they began drawing the duck and the fish on the sides of their pottery bowls. Then, little by little, all over the long years, their skill as artists increased and their everyday objects became as beautiful as they were useful (27).After this eventual increase in the artistic endowment fund of the nation, new practices came in to use by which Ancient Egyptians expressed themselves. For example, tombs went from being mer e pits and hollows in the sand to being quite complex. These structures have become what the human beings knows today as the Pyramids of Giza. A main characteristic of their religion was the fact that they believed in numerous gods which each had a special power or purpose. The gods personified everything the Egyptians wondered virtually or feared or hoped for. Reigning supreme over this multitude was Ra, the great god of the sun (Howell 51).Each entity was constructed his or her own temple so that the people could worship there. Also, the priests made sacrifices to the entities and bathed and anointed golden figures of them. The gods were often represented by animals and specialized symbols. The religion, art, and architecture of the Ancient Egyptians were so closely tied to one another that it is sometimes hard to distinguish between them. In fact, the Ancient Egyptians religion was the most common subject matter of their sculptures, paintings, and structures. For example, the dramatic area of construction was that for temples and tombs.Such edifices were skilfully painted with murals to depict the purpose of the room or section a temple would have pictures of the gods, and a tomb would have art showing a burial or death. In addition, ancient mythological texts were beautifully carved and painted on these walls. Although these were all applications of art and architecture in religion, the most prominent is most likely the funerary art of the Ancient Egyptians. Although the Ancient Egyptians religion has been fully demonstrated through Egyptian art and architecture the influence of their beliefs has panoptic far beyond what is imaginable.According to Noel Q. King, author of Religions of Africa, Egyptian religion of old has had one of the greatest effects upon Africas modern religions (47-48). For example, the multiple gods that the Ancient Egyptians adoptive into their theism so long ago are still today present in many African tribes. In addition, the me thods used in ancient mumification necrosis are the root of corpse preservation in modern society. Such contributions of the Ancient Egyptians have been adapted into methods used by todays populace in many instances. This is because the culture of Ancient Egypt has provided a stimulus which creates the desire to live, to succeed, and to be remembered in history (Showker 156). ? On the Value of a Degree in the Philippines Essay Example for Free

On the Value of a Degree in the Philippines undertakeThe employment chances of a fresh college graduate is only 4 in 10, with only 1 in that 4 attaining work relevant to ones course. Even in light of the unprecedented growth of 6. 6% in GDP oer the last year, the labor sector fails to follow suit in what economists characterize as a job-shedding growth. So where does a college degree place us? With the increased pressures on the youth to attend college, many consider the human race of a higher education bubble. The concept hypothesizes, in part, that movements in factors such as tuition payments and unemployable graduates severely decrease the rate of reelect to a college degree up to a point where it is rendered useless. In the case of the Philippines, effective capping of tuition fees to relatively affordable rates, spaces us from a bubble as of yet. However, it is to be stressed that with everyone jumping in the college wagon all at once as is apparent now we will soon fin d college degrees as no more useful than scratch, and then the true bubble begins. There are too many college graduates. All college students should be aware that although a degree does return doors it loses much of its value as more and more people achieve this accolade. In 2012, a total of 517,425 college students graduated and entered the labor force. With another half a million expected to graduate in March this year, there is increasing concern on their place in the labor market. The number of graduates increase over the years, however jobs increase terribly less, if they increase at all 882,000 jobs were reported to have disappeared in 2012.Since too many people compete for the same job, employers flock afford to lower wages or increase qualifications as much as possible. This is apparent in the over qualification of some jobs now supermarket baggers or janitors are expected to have had some years of college or even graduated the same, as opposed to the minimum of high scho ol undergraduate in most other countries. College courses are insufficient or incompatible with jobs offered in the market. The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) holds job and livelihood fairs across the country, recently offer a total of 360,777 job vacancies. But on a nationwide count only 5,101 job applicants were hired on the spot. In another attempt, the administration posted in its Phil. JobNet website 230,000 jobs but only 117,000 applied. Apparently, the jobs created by the government are inconsistent with what graduates believe they deserve or were trained for in those four or more years of education. To add, even once employed underemployment lingers tainting up to about 7. 2 million job matches with insufficient base pay as main(prenominal) culprit. Nearly everyone believes a college education is essential. In our society, the college degree has been stigmatized as the best and surest and sometimes only path to take in preparation for ones career. This is con testable however as evidenced in European countries where entrepreneurship and technical education are much more popular and profitable paths than college. The Philippines doesnt unavoidably lack these options, (i. e. TESDA) rather we lack awareness and social approval for these said alternatives. Solutions De-emphasize the necessity of a college degree. The higher education system of countries like Germany, persevere stable and un-depreciated, since non-professional or non-corporate jobs are highly popular and equally regarded with college education. Removing the stigma of a college degree can relieve pressure on prices and rates of return to higher education. Therefore, introducing and popularizing technical courses which are actually highly demanded can solve much of the Philippine labor problem. Redesigning colleges and curriculums to incorporate in-demand jobs. Supply may be easier change to cope with the requirements of demand, rather than the other way around.Close associ ation with firms accompanied by an overhaul of course curriculums to better suit the needs of employers can efficaciously reduce mismatch. Administrators and faculty should understand the factors at work in how their programs are depreciating since if the market for college degrees becomes over-saturated we will all pay the price of meaningless degrees and deplorable opportunity for many in the workplace. Many experts and opinions point to the governments futile efforts at job creation (i. e. demand) as the main antagonist in this story. However, the equally policy-relevant yet rarely focused upon supply side of labour mayoffer other, more easily interceded directions. Solving the Philippines problems on labour is a tall order however attacking from all sides both demand and supply can better efforts towards the nationwide goal of comprehensive growth. Media Essays Media Tool Celebrities

Media Essays Media Tool CelebritiesMedia Tool CelebritiesIn Order to Feed the Publics Need to Know the Media has Become a apparatus of Celebrities to Facilitate Their Out of Control Life-StylesDaily we read them, headlines that argon crafted to focus our attention on the lives of celebrities. Whether those headlines atomic number 18 found on the opening screens of our Internet aid Providers or, be they the headlines that we read duration standing in line at the check-out counter of our local grocery store, we are spoon fed day-after-day doses of the clean-living and ethical failures of the rich and famous.Daily we hear virtually them, they are the lead-in stories for our local news broadcasts and the fodder for jokes on late night television. They are unbent life accounts of extreme and horrid conduct of celebrities. Whether we hear the accounts as news items or as punch-lines, celebrity escapades seem to document a wasting by of talent and squandering of the endless possi bilities that are celebrities are concedeed.Even though we would expect these headlines to appear in dramatized versions of tabloid newspapers known for sensationalized journalism. More and more we happen the exploits of the same few persons repeatedly making their way into main stream media as well. This outcome was most predictable, as the habits and life-styles that are practiced and lived by celebrities unneurotic with the indulgences provided to them collide with the norms of social conscience and the requirements of law.We the consumer, are encouraged to fill the void in our lives by being observers to theirs. To a large segment of ships company those daily doses of celebrity voyeurism serves to feed a craving not unlike doses of heroine to a junkie. We as a society crave to know more because we progress to for the durable period of time, been given glimpses of these celebrities successes and failures. Some of us relish when their lives are filled happiness and success, taking pride in their accomplishments. Some of us are envious of them, consider them pampered and spoiled, relishing the fact that they find themselves in trouble or, are acting in conformity with a self-destructive path. What is happening in the lives of genus Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Jen, or Lindsay Lohan? Who is their latest love interest? Where do they party and with whom? What are the latest fashion trends they are setting? What problems have they gotten themselves into most late? All these questions and more are answered for us even before the questions are asked. Are these questions answered for us because the media wants to fuel our interest in celebrities lives? Or, are they answered for us because the media is scarce responding to the demands of the ordinarys need to know? Or, is the media being used as a tool of the celebrity, a means for the celebrity to increase demand for themselves as a commodity that results in their index to earn ever increasing sums of m an ey that can be used to sustain their life-style?The media and celebrities have a strange symbiotic relationship. Celebrities go out of their way to garner the spot-light when it is convenient for them and when the headline or photos help to foster their image. Yet, that same celebrity will not hesitate to berate the media when the headline writers and paparazzi portray them in a bad light or invade the privacy the celebrities claim they desire. This inter-relationship between celebrities and the media is aimed at one audience, the public that fuels both with money. Consequently, it must be argued and I firmly believe that the media is a tool of celebrities that facilitates their Out of Control life-styles in an attempt to capitalize on the general publics tendency to Celebrity Worship, a tendency that has recently been classified by degree and personality type in the Celebrity Attitude Scale.1The Celebrity Attitude Scale identifies three (3) personality profiles, Entertainment-Social (This dimension comprises attitudes that fans are attracted to a favorite celebrity because of their perceived ability to entertain and break down a social focus) Intense-Personal (The intense-personal aspect of celebrity worship reflects intensive and compulsive feelings about the celebrity, akin to the obsessional tendencies of fans) and, Borderline-Pathological (This dimension is typified by disobedient behaviors and fantasies regarding scenarios involving their celebrities).Whether the medium is print, television or Internet web sites, the media is banking on every member of the public to whatever degree, being inflicted with Celebrity Worship and if not already smitten, the media is dedicated to causing those not yet smitten to become so by discovering the latest tidbits that can be converted into breaking news about the lives of celebrities. Banking is the appropriate word.It was in 1957 that American citizens obsession with celebrities was fist responsible for attaining r ough merchandising revenues that exceeded One Billion Dollars (US$1,000,000,000.00) annually.2 It would be a monumental task to bringing close together the current gross merchandising revenues generated and numbers of persons that Celebrity Worship is directly responsible for employing. However, it is easy to comprehend that from the scope of the task of writing, photographing, publishing, distributing and selling accounts of celebrities latest adventures on a national and international basis and, taking into consideration payrolls, travel expenses, advertising revenues, publication and broadcast processes and the sales of merchandise, that the number of persons employed would total into the hundreds of thousands and, gross revenues would exceed the Gross National Products of many of the worlds nations. Not only are the media outlets scoring big profits from publicizing the education they beat about celebrities in order to obtain increased readership and ratings that translate into increased revenue from advertising and magazine sales, so too are the celebrities who are get rich in the process as their names, likeness and mere presence become a commodity to a hungry public.By way of recitation, in 2004 through 2005, Paris Hilton was paid as much as $300,000.00 to attend foreign events, including parties thrown in her honor. During the course of that year, she earned an estimated $6,500,000.00 in personal fashion fees, was mentioned in 17,591 press clips and 592 radio set and television shows.3 However, after her release from jail, it was reported but subsequently denied by her publicists, that she was demanding Three Hundred and Fifty Thousand British Pounds (350,000.00), which is approximately $662,000.00, to appear on a British Radio Show to discuss her prison ordeal.Likewise, Lindsay Lohan granted Ok Magazine an exclusive audience within 17 hours of checking herself into the Cirque Lodge rehabilitation facility and again, upon returning to Los Angeles following her discharge from the facility. The hearing was not motivated merely by a desire to evidence to her fans that she was sincere about changing her lifes direction. Rather, to a great extent, it was motivated by the fees she charged them to publish the exclusive interview and the pictures comprisen of her with her estranged father. The medias coverage of celebrities creates a spiral effect. The more publicity they garner propels them to earn increasing sums of money. The increasing sums of money then bring home the bacon them to engage in outrageous conduct that garners them more publicity all of which fuels the publics demand in furtherance of the adage that has now become entrenched in the marketing of celebrities there is no such thing as bad press.Either because celebrities believe that there is no such thing as bad press, or because their lavish life-styles and high profile names make them believe they are beyond suffering the repercussions of their conduct, celebrit ies have been Out of Control in the conduct of their lives and pose a risk of harm to themselves and to others.Whether their Out of Control conduct is the product of attempts by some to go forward their names in the public spot-light in what they perceive as a marketing ploy that will inspire, delight and perhaps enlarge their fan coarse or, the arrogance that is fueled by their celebrity status, the acts and omissions of some celebrities has in many instances shocked the American conscious. Moreover, to a certain degree, it may have had very blotto backlash that is only now being recognized and that may result in some celebrities learning that they need to exert self-control and discipline in their lives. The masses observe and interact with each other in idle gossip about the lives of celebrities. The masses comment on the unacceptability of these celebrities conduct. Yet, that same society encourages these celebrities actions by continuing to pay for the magazines, watching the shows and reading the web site blogs carry ond by the media. The added publicity then provides positive reinforcement to their unacceptable conduct. Consequently, the general publics reaction to the media coverage contributes to these celebrities downward spiral by Operant Conditioning, the psychological theory that positive reinforcement of bad acts will perpetuate bad acts.4The lives of celebrities take over our world in many ways. We turn on the television the celebrities are there. We go to the market the celebrities are there. We turn on our computer and search them out.Our societies pop culture has turned watching drugged out or drunken, half naked, rich girls into a national past-time. We have to take the time to ask ourselves, are these people desired to be our next generations employment models? If so, the world is going to be a very scary place. Yet, our overwhelming dollars elevate them in the hearts and minds of the young who observe their parents and their peers obses sing on the lives of these celebrities.Through the demand placed by the public for access to more and more information on these celebrities, we are giving these celebrities more opportunity, career success, name recognition, and profit from their own bad behavior. This in turn results in more and more outrageous conduct as they take us to new moral and social lows.It has often been said by celebrities that they do not want to be role models for our children. Yet, the spot-light that is cast upon them by media attention puts them in that power position. As tweens children between the ages of 8 to 12 years grow up they dont have a lot of prior knowledge when it comes to lots of situations, and so they look for someone to imitate. For tweens this often means the person is someone they want to be like.5 Since these celebrities are role models nonetheless, should we not let our dollars force them into becoming if not good role models, role models that will not engage in conduct that is heedless to the life and property of others? This was the message being sent with the incarceration of Paris Hilton this is the message that awaits Lindsay Lohan now that she has emerged from rehabilitation to face the consequences of her reckless driving while under the influence of controlled substances and, this is the lessen that has been learned by Brittany Spears, who is now paying one of the most costly of all prices for her conduct, the loss of her children. As the news of the make of the harm caused by each of these celebrities reached out to society through the media what was the result? Vehement protests by their ardent fans to how their favorite celebrity was treated bashing and name calling by those that dislike or are envious of them and, increased sales of magazines for those that got the Money Photo.Persons with untold wealth can always afford to do what those who do not have such vast amounts of discretionary money cannot afford to do. But we as a society can littl e afford to support the publications that would flaunt their conduct and make it appear to be acceptable.A message must be sent to the media, that they are a tool of these celebrities who are using them to gain access to ever increasing sums of wealth. Therefore, if the media will not censor their own publications, then it is necessary for the power of money to do it, by way of boycotting the publications that support these celebrities bad acts by providing publicity to them.Bibliography1.Maltby, J., Houran, J., Lange, R., Ashe, D., McCutcheon, L.E.
